Couples who are having marriage difficulties may consider seeing a marriage counselor to assist them with the issues. You don't have to do this, it may help to have someone outside of the relationship guide you through the communication but it's not a "have to." The couple is the solution to the problem, not the marriage counseling. So you need to start talking, don't wait on counseling, move toward solutions now. Here are some basic ideas to begin the process:

Set aside time to communicate with each other and make up rules for that communication. Many times it is only a lack of communication in your marriage from which all the other issues stem. Make sure to take turns expressing your feelings and listen, to insure that you are both getting equal time.

Focus on love. You are together for a reason, and you need to bring that reason back into focus. It is for this reason that it is very important to have a good handle on why you chose the spouse you did and to refocus your love on them again. Kill em with kindness. Many times marriage problems creep into a marriage and when the problems creep in, respect and kindness sneak out the back door. It is important that while you are trying to work on your marriage that you be as nice to the other person as you can be. Go out of your way to do nice things for them, and you will find this is one of the best ways to turn around a cold heart.

Physical Affection. While at first this may be difficult because there may be a lot of tension between the two of you, if at all possible at least touch each other and hug each other. Physical love can help break down the barriers. Consider writing down problems and issues. Sometimes written words are less difficult than confrontation, so consider writing a letter to better explain your feelings or the problems that you see. Do so when your spouse can have time to process this without immediately discussing it. Sometimes when allowed to sink in a little bit, you will find that you spouse is more receptive to the things you said.

Keep in mind that marriage counseling is not intended to repair your marriage that is up to you and your spouse. A marriage counselor can provide you with some helpful tools and tips that you can implement, but they can not fix your marriage. There are other resources that can help you repair your marriage yourself and these can be found on the web or in your local library. Keep in mind that although marriage counseling can be helpful, it will not save your marriage, that is up to you.
