Marriage is a delicate balance of two individuals. They are trying to deal with the everyday stress
es and trying to work together, but there is conflict that arises in every marriage. One thing is for certain, whenever two people live together there are bound to be differences of opinion, but they don't always lead to marriage problems.
When the conflicts bring up something that is beyond the capabilities of couple to handle it then the marriage problems start. The issue to this will be where the couple can't find a resolution or they keep the conflict going beyond the time when it should be over. These types of problems will come up when the communication has become ineffective between the two partners, and that then creates more issues in trying to resolve anything.
A couple may try to push past this communication problem but sometimes things get worse if they are not listening with good communication skills. Then somebody gets hurt feeling and it becomes a slippery slope and there's no good resolution. Here's where couples will find themselve with two paths, either to divorce or to seek marriage counseling.
To avoid divorce, attempting to participate in counseling may seem like a good plan but a lot of the time the couple are too far gone before they ask for help so then end up in divorce despite the counseling. Going to a marriage counselor appears to be an easy solution, the counselor will fix my problems and save my marriage but this isn't really how it works, they lack an understanding of the function of marriage counselors.
Marriage counseling can only be successful if both parties are willing to accept responsibility for their part in the breakdown of the marriage and are willing to work together to repair the problems that exist. And for those that are willing to work together to repair their marriage there are many counseling resources that may be just as effective, like books and tapes, that can help just as much as a marriage counselor, but cost a whole lot less.
